TRISE: Self-managed Community Center in Athens

One of TRISE’s projects is a open social space in the heart of Athens, Greece. Located near Syntagma Square (31 Kolokotronis Street), it is an entirely self-organized/self-managed place.

Its two-storey building has a rich radical tradition as it has housed various initiatives over the decades, such as the historical magazine «Κοινωνία και Φύση» (=Society and Nature).

Since 2019, the space began regular operation as the home of the homonymous Transnational Institute of Social Ecology (TRISE) -from which it’s still named after!- while it gradually began to be accompanied by a variety of activities from the Political Collective “Aftenergeia”. Today, the space is opening up more and brings together other groups such as the “Libertarian Syndicalist Union of Athens – ESE”, individuals and initiatives from the cultural groups of the former social center “Π” as well as other self-organized projects.

Within the space, the structure of the International Institute of Social Ecology (TRISE) operates with its self-organized bookstore that offers selected publications of political theory related to collective struggles and self-institution – autonomy, social ecology, direct democracy, feminism, etc. In addition, this structure also has English-language titles of relevant books. In TRISE, you will also find the books of the anti-authoritarian publishing house & website “Aftoleksi”.

In TRISE, collective reading groups are held as well as public political discussions, assemblies, screenings, book presentations, artistic events, musical evenings, etc., while during summer the activities are moved to our rooftop terrace. A permanent self-organized canteen and a library operate, also, in the space.

All the above activities are co-decided in the open self-managed assembly where anyone can bring his/her proposal! The space is self-financed, which means that its only resource is all of us, the social base that supports the whole project.

TRISE is addressed to the whole of society and to those concerned with individual and collective emancipation beyond the state and capital. For this reason, we oppose all forms of hierarchy and discrimination (sexism, nationalism, aegism, etc.) We expect TRISE to continue being a social hub of action, radical ideas and critical thinking beyond any authority.

In the center of a metropolis, which is under attack by an agressive touristification, we seek to contribute to the creation of PUBLIC PLACES, in the political sense of the term, as places where people will not be customers-guests-consumers but active and concerned citizens of their city, for unmediated-direct-democratic participation in EVERYTHING that concerns us!
