Practicing Social Ecology: Presentation by Eleanor Finley (Audio)
The Transnational Institute of Social Ecology hosted a talk by Eleanor Finley at its social space in Athens on the 20th of September, 2026. The occasion was Eleanor’s trip around Europe and the recent publication of her book “Practicing Social Ecology: From Bookchin to Rojava and Beyond” (Pluto Press, 2025).
In her presentation, Eleanor Finley examines how we can harness society’s potential to change the course of the climate crisis. She suggests that there is an astonishing, untapped source of strength within our communities that can help us in the struggle for a democratic and ecological future.
Drawing on her experience in democratic ecological movements—ranging from Rojava to various municipal initiatives and beyond—she highlights the importance of fostering assemblies, confederations, study groups, and permaculture projects.
Looking back at history, she charts how social ecologists, such as Murray Bookchin, have waged inspiring struggles for climate and energy, agriculture, and climate and social justice, challenging unlimited capitalist growth through the democratic power of social ecology.
